The international Rugby 7’s spotlight will fall on Modimolle this coming September when more than 60 teams converge on the Northern Province for the inaugural Willem Strauss International Rugby 7’s Tournament, presented by STADIO and Interactive Security as headline sponsors.

According to Marius Schoeman, Springboks 7’s High Performance Manager, the tournament, which takes place from 6-8 September, offers the SA 7's systems for men and women the opportunity to start their rebuilding process in the new cycle leading up to the next Olympic games.

"We will use the tournament to evaluate new talent with experienced players like Ricardo Duarttee that will be in action as well," said Schoeman.

According to Springbok Women's 7's coach, Renfred Dazel the tournament creates more game time opportunity for the elite women's players in the SA 7's system.

Joining the SA teams will be a number of international sides from Africa as well as host of provincial teams, including the Blue Bulls.

South Africa’s top university teams will also be in action to prepare for the annual University Sport South Africa 7’s tournament in Kimberly two weeks later.

According to Wynand de Villiers, marketing and student recruitment manager for STADIO distance learning, the tournament pays tribute to Willem Strauss, President of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.

Strauss was the pioneer of Rugby 7's in South Africa more than 20 years ago, when the first @tlantic 7's tournaments, which produced a number of Blitzboks, took place locally under his auspices.

"We are delighted to support the tournament. It will assist in further growth of Rugby 7’s not just in the tertiary education environment, but also on high schools level in South Africa.

“STADIO will be participating in the USSA 7’s tournament in Kimberley and this is great preparation for us,”
said De Villiers.

The tournament will take place at Hoërskool Nylstroom and there are 5 tiers of participation, namely:
  • Men's International Division
  • Women's International Division
  • Men's Premier Division
  • Schools u17 Division
  • Schools u 15 Division
"Rugby 7's is a wonderful sport. It enables stronger teams to compete against traditionally weaker teams. You won't see this in the 15's code," according to Richard Janse van Rensburg, the Tournament Director.

"An interesting addition will be the Dinamika SA Deaf 7's team, " said Van Rensburg. "This falls in line with the stated aim of the tournament to be inclusive and to widen access to rugby," he concluded.

The tournament is made possible by the following valued sponsors:
  • STADIO
  • Interactive Security
  • AIG
  • Dorsland
  • Jan Engineering
  • Serp
  • Gys Pitzer Motoring
  • Leisure and Adventure
